Department Overview

About OHSU Doernbecher Children’s HospitalWith a strong tradition of teamwork, diversity and interdisciplinary care, we believe all children deserve the best. At Doernbecher, we built a hospital around that belief. It’s why we have more specialists in children’s health than anywhere else in the state. We offer the newest and most advanced treatments available, along with innovative collaborations and research opportunities. As Oregon’s only academic health center, we strive to offer the best medical care to every child across Oregon, Southwest Washington and beyond.

About OHSUOHSU's singular focus on improving health starts with Oregonians and has global impact. We are the only academic health center in Oregon, but we're also nationally distinct as a university dedicated solely to advancing health sciences. This allows us to concentrate resources on research to prevent and cure disease, on education that prepares physicians, dentists, nurses and other health professionals to succeed in an evolving health care environment, and on patient care that incorporates the latest knowledge and discoveries. We have 18,000 employees and secure competitive research funding of more than $400 million a year. As a public organization, we provide community outreach and services for Oregon's most vulnerable populations. OHSU’s stated mission to improve the health and quality of life for all Oregonians through excellence, innovation and leadership in health care, education and research.

Function/Duties of Position

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

The Bridges Pediatric Palliative Care APP delivers care aligned with a defined scope of practice in pediatric palliative care, with work expectations operationalized through departmental workflows, productivity standards, and performance expectations consistent with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and institutional policies.

This role is structured to meet contract-defined work expectations of a maximum of 1792 clinical hours, inclusive of weekday-only coverage, aligned with the clinical coverage model and patient care needs of the service.

The Bridges Pediatric Palliative Care APP will participate in departmental scheduling processes, excluding weekends/holidays/call responsibilities, with scheduling practices aligned to contract provisions, equitable distribution of coverage, and maintenance of safe, consistent clinical operations.

Clinical Activities (not assigned administrative, education, or research FTE):

Direct

  • Patient population: Seriously ill children and adolescents
  • Practice area: Inpatient and ambulatory
  • Practice type: Independent and shared; WRVU-generating
  • Clinical coverage requirement: Weekday inpatient and outpatient consults and scheduled clinic appointments; excludes nights, weekends, holidays, and call
  • Department specific activities

This is a remarkable opportunity for an Advanced Practice Professional to join the Bridges Pediatric Palliative Care Team at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. As part of the interdisciplinary team alongside physicians, RNs, chaplains and social workers, the APP will provide excellent clinical care to seriously ill children in the inpatient and outpatient areas. The APP also will have the opportunity to collaborate with other organizations in Oregon to improve the care of children living with life-limiting illness. The APP will work in collaboration with the Medical Director of the Bridges Palliative Care Program, faculty, staff and OHSU leadership to provide service which furthers the University’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

While palliative care experience is strongly preferred, mentorship is available for a dynamic, collaborative advanced practice provider who is eager to learn and has a “hospice heart.”

The APP faculty will have numerous opportunities to become involved in quality improvement work, education, research, and childhood advocacy. Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, the Department of Pediatrics, and the Division of Palliative Care are committed to developing our faculty members’ careers. There is also a pathway for academic advancement for APPs at OHSU.

Professional participation is expected, including attendance in relevant educational conferences and didactic conferences.

As teaching is an important portion of the OHSU and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital missions, you will be responsible for collaborating with and teaching students and trainees.
