Position Overview
St. Charles Health System is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Gastroenterologist Hospitalist to provide inpatient GI care at St. Charles Bend Hospital (2500 NE Neff Rd, Bend, OR). GI Hospitalists diagnose, prevent and treat hospitalized patients referred for GI tract diagnosis by community primary care doctors, emergency room doctors and other hospital physicians.
This is a hospital-based role covering medical, surgical and postoperative management of the GI tract, with a broad procedural scope including endoscopy, EUS and ERCP. You will work alongside providers in other specialties to give patients specialized GI support, on a block schedule of 7 on / 7 off or 14 on / 14 off.
Work Schedule & Call Expectations
- Shifts are generally 24 hours: 10–12 hours in house, then on call back
- Rotations of 7 on / 7 off or 14 on / 14 off, with a maximum of 148 annual shifts
- Night back-up call required
- Practice location: St. Charles Bend Hospital, Bend, Oregon
Key Responsibilities
- Examine, diagnose and treat with a broad procedural scope: endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, colonoscopy, ERCP, sigmoidoscopy, capsule endoscopy and feeding tube insertion
- Perform emergency procedures as needed, which may include endotracheal intubation, tube thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, ultrasonographic evaluation and peritoneal lavage
- Take histories and examinations; order and interpret laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic studies to set the diagnosis and therapeutic plan
- Prescribe medications and perform medical and surgical procedures in line with state law and practice guidelines
- Educate patients and families on medications, treatments, illness prevention and community resources
- Triage patient telephone calls and provide consultation as needed
- Document all care in the EMR for timely, accurate billing
- Participate in provider and site medical staff meetings and help shape policy
Qualifications
Education
- Graduation from an accredited medical school
- Completion of an accredited residency program in Gastroenterology
Licensure & Certification
- Current MD / DO license; Oregon license preferred
- Board certified or board eligible; those not yet certified must become board certified within seven years of completing residency or fellowship
- Unrestricted Federal DEA number (registered in Oregon preferred)
- ACLS certification
- Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid and other government health care programs
- Valid driver’s license
Experience
- Experience providing care in a hospital setting (required)
- Experience using EMR software (required)
- Prior process improvement and standard work development experience preferred
