Position Overview
St. Charles Health System is seeking experienced Pediatric Hospitalists to provide per diem inpatient pediatric coverage as independent contractors (1099) at St. Charles Bend Hospital in Bend, Oregon. This opportunity is ideal for board-certified or board-eligible pediatricians who enjoy caring for hospitalized children in a collaborative, family-centered environment and want flexibility in their schedule.
The Pediatric Hospitalist examines, diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions in newborns, infants, children and adolescents, using current evidence-based guidelines and providing compassionate care that addresses social determinants of health. Day, swing and night shift coverage is available, with scheduling built around departmental needs and your availability.

Work Schedule & Call Expectations
- Coverage through a combination of day, swing and night shifts
- Day shifts are generally 10 hours; weekday swing shifts are generally 6 hours
- Night coverage includes a minimum of 6 onsite hours and 8 hours of off-site call, averaging 8–9 hours on-site each night
- Off-site call requires returning to the hospital for admissions, urgent needs or emergencies with a 20-minute or less response time
- Scheduling is flexible, based on departmental coverage needs and contractor availability
Key Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient hospitalist coverage for newborns, infants, children and adolescents admitted to St. Charles Bend Hospital
- Provide newborn care
- Assess, diagnose and manage acute and chronic pediatric conditions using evidence-based practices
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations including medical, surgical, developmental, psychosocial and family histories
- Coordinate admissions, consultations, transfers and discharges
- Participate in emergency pediatric evaluations and stabilization when necessary
- Collaborate with primary care providers, specialists, nursing, care management and ancillary services; request specialty consultations as needed
- Communicate with patients and families about diagnoses, treatment recommendations and discharge planning
- Complete timely, accurate documentation in the EMR and support quality, safety and patient satisfaction initiatives
Qualifications
Education
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
- Completion of an accredited Pediatrics or combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency
Licensure & Certification
- Board certified or board eligible in Pediatrics
- Active Oregon medical license or ability to obtain Oregon licensure
- Active, unrestricted DEA registration
- PALS and NRP certification
- Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare, Medicaid and other governmental healthcare programs
- Valid driver’s license
Experience
- Two or more years of pediatric inpatient experience preferred
- Fellowship training or board certification in Pediatric Hospital Medicine preferred
- Experience with Epic electronic medical records preferred
- Experience in rural or community hospital settings preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Strong clinical judgment and the ability to work independently within a hospital-based practice
- Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
