Position Overview

St. Charles Health System is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider, Surgery (PA or NP) to join St. Charles Surgical Specialists in Bend, Oregon. In this role you will first assist in the operating room across all aspects of General Surgery, including open, laparoscopic and robotic techniques for bariatric, colorectal and breast operations.

You will also provide inpatient and outpatient care, including daily rounding, orders, post-op instructions, discharge summaries, clinic consultations and post-operative office visits. St. Charles Surgical Specialists is a comprehensive surgical practice offering general surgery, bariatrics, endoscopy and pH/manometry, with subspecialties in colorectal, robotic and breast surgery, and clinics in Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Madras.


Work Schedule & Call Expectations

  • Full-time exempt role with a minimum of 40 hours of inpatient and outpatient contact per week
  • Generally four 10-hour days, blending hospital rounding, procedure time and scheduled clinic visits
  • First-call coverage for inpatient and outpatient questions during regular work hours, shared equally by all APPs in the group
  • Weekend call rotation shared by the APPs in collaboration with a surgeon, generally 24-hour shifts covering Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as first or second assistant during surgical procedures as directed by the physicians
  • Perform patient examinations and record pertinent history and findings
  • Order and interpret laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic studies to determine diagnosis and treatment plan
  • Prescribe medications and perform medical and surgical procedures in line with state law and practice guidelines
  • Under physician supervision, participate in the care of hospital inpatients and outpatients
  • Educate patients and families on treatments and illness prevention
  • Triage patient telephone calls and provide consultation as needed
  • Document all care in the EMR for timely, accurate billing
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement activities

Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of an approved Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program

Licensure & Certification

  • Unrestricted PA and/or NP licensure in Oregon
  • PA: NCCPA certification and ability to establish and maintain a Collaborative Agreement through OMB
  • NP: AANC, NCC, AANP or AMCB certification
  • Unrestricted federal DEA number registered in Oregon
  • Current BLS certification; ACLS required if practicing moderate or deep sedation
  • Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare, Medicaid and other governmental health care programs
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements
  • Preferred: robotic surgery certification

Experience

  • Required: experience with hospital rounding
  • Preferred: experience as a General Surgery first assist
  • Preferred: training and experience in bariatric and robotic surgery

  • Advanced communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration, including facilitation and consensus building
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently, with close attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills, including in stressful interactions
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with EMR systems; intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel
