Position Overview

St. Charles Health System is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join St. Charles Orthopedics & Neurosurgery in Bend, Oregon as an Advanced Practice Provider – Orthopedics (Total Joints). In this role you will support a team of orthopedic surgeons in the clinic, on hospital rounds and in the operating rooms of both the hospital and ambulatory surgery centers, including assisting with total joint replacement.

The Orthopedic, Neurosurgery & Physiatry Service Line provides ambulatory, procedural and inpatient care and includes approximately 60 providers representing the full spectrum of neuromusculoskeletal care. The team collaborates extensively with the Bend hospital-based acute surgery and trauma team to build a robust trauma program for the growing Central Oregon community.


Work Schedule & Call Expectations

  • Minimum of 40 hours per week, with a minimum of 36 hours of patient contact
  • A blend of surgical assist, hospital rounding, admissions, discharges and scheduled and walk-in clinic visits
  • Participation in a call rotation, triaging patient calls from the after-hours answering service

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians with the range of orthopedic surgeries, including total joint replacement, sports, hand, foot & ankle and trauma
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative care in clinic
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as joint aspirations and injections
  • Round on orthopedic patients in the hospital as needed
  • Exercise judgment on conditions requiring consultation, referral or evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon or other professionals
  • Educate and counsel patients and families on current health problems, health maintenance and prevention
  • Document all care in the EMR for timely, accurate billing
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to policy and clinical practice guidelines

Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of an approved Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program, with certification appropriate to your license

Licensure & Certification

  • Unrestricted PA and/or NP licensure in the state of Oregon
  • PAs: NCCPA certification and the ability to establish and maintain a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a supervising physician through OMB
  • NPs: AANC, NCC or AANP, AMCB certification
  • Unrestricted Federal DEA number registered in Oregon
  • Current BLS certification
  • Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid and other government health care programs
  • Orthopedic Physician Assistant Certification through the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Physician Assistants preferred

Experience

  • Experience using EMR software (required); Epic experience preferred
  • Prior experience with orthopedic surgery and/or trauma surgery preferred
  • Experience working in a team environment, collaborating and building consensus among health care professionals

Skills & Competencies

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population
  • Strong team-working and collaborative skills
  • Able to multi-task and work independently, with attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills, including in stressful interactions
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with EMR systems; intermediate in Microsoft Word and Excel
